It aimed to motivate the young generations to inspire their families to pick up the habit of bringing their own bags and establishing a greener family.
Wellcome Reusable Bag Design Competition - Wellcome has hosted many Green design activities in recent years, and in 2007, Wellcome and the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation co-hosted "Wellcome Reusable Bag Design competition." Fuelled by their imaginations, students from territory-wide schools were invited to submit green design projects. Two renowned local comic artists, Siu Hak and Stella So, were invited to guide students through their projects. Several outstanding projects were exhibited around Wellcome stores and shopping malls after the competition. The winning bag design was reproduced as a real reusable bag for sale in Wellcome supermarkets all over Hong Kong.
Creative Barcode Competition - This was another competition designed to ignite and challenge the imaginations of young students. Territory-wide schools were invited to use the barcodes on fresh food products to create unique art pieces. Using "freshness" as the main theme, students were given the opportunity to create a bold and imaginative work of art.
Environmental awareness education - In 2007, Wellcome took part in a "Little Reporter Training Course" organised by Hong Kong Daily News Charities Fund and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. 20 young reporters gathered information, took photographs, conducted interviews and wrote news stories on a variety of environmental issues - greatly deepening their knowledge and understanding of the environment through this invaluable course.
Taking care of senior citizens - We understand that senior citizens require special help and financial assistance from time to time, that's why Wellcome is the only supermarket chain to consistently offer an extensive range of special offers for Senior Citizen Cardholders.
Historic preservation - In 2003, Wellcome opened a store within the Old Stanley Police station - the first supermarket in Hong Kong to open within a historical monument. It was an opportunity to use our resources to preserve, maintain and liven the monument, while at the same time, gives the general public an opportunity to visit this proud, historical monument when shopping.
Wellcome Theatre - - A marvellous transformation from cowsheds to theatre
100 years ago, before refrigerators were popular, the public was less aware of public sanitary issues. That is when Dairy Farm decided to build a number of cowsheds and breed imported cattle locally in order to ensure a daily supply of disease-free fresh milk and dairy products to the community. Dairy Farm has transformed from dairymen to retailers. To preserve the historical cowsheds, Dairy Farm invested HK$2.2 million and restore two cowsheds to a multi-purpose theatre, now known as the Wellcome Theatre. The theatre serves as training facilities for the Academy School of Film and Television. Charity work - Every year Wellcome supports mental health care by donating to Mindset for improving their medical facilities, mental health recovery centres and to raise public awareness. Furthermore, Wellcome also actively participates in charity programs, for example, the "Skip Lunch Day" organized by The Community Chest.
Dairy Farm Supports Sichuan Earthquake Relief - To support disaster relief efforts being carried out in the aftermath of the Sichuan earthquake in China, Wellcome joined with other Dairy Farm members including 7-Eleven, Ikea and Mannings to collect donations through the extensive Group network of over 1,300 retail outlets. Dairy Farm has managed to raise almost HK$14 million in the four short weeks up to June 2008.
